What Size Is 1X? Plus-Size Sizing Explained for Curvy Women

By CurvyEdit Fit Team | Reviewed by Hanna | Updated September 2026

If you've ever added a 1X dress to your cart and wondered whether it will actually fit, you're not alone. The short answer: in most women's plus-size clothing, 1X fits US 16W–18W, cut for about a 42–46 inch bust, 34–41 inch waist, and 46–49 inch hips. Check the product page for the exact body measurements.

But those numbers are a range, not a guarantee. The dress cut, fabric stretch, and brand pattern decide how that 1X actually fits.

What size is 1X in women's plus-size clothing?

1X is a plus-size label. Most brands map it to 16W–18W. Some relaxed styles may list 1X as 16–18 because they are cut with extra room.

In our CurvyEdit dress charts, five of six styles map 1X to 16W–18W. The relaxed straight-cut tee dress maps it to 16–18. That's not inconsistent sizing — it's intentional pattern grading for different silhouettes.

Typical 1X body measurements:

  • Bust: 42–46 inches
  • Waist: 34–41 inches
  • Hips: 46–49 inches

These ranges are broad because they include bodycon, wrap, A-line, and relaxed dresses. A single number would be easier, but it would also be wrong for many women.

Why the same 1X fits differently in different dresses

A size label is not a body measurement. It is a pattern grade. A stretch bodycon in 1X is designed to hug the body. A tie-waist maxi in 1X may have extra room at the waist and hips. Both can be labeled 1X, but they are not cut for the same exact measurements.

In our own charts, the recommended bust for a 1X runs from 39 inches on a non-stretch ruched bodycon to 47 inches on a faux-wrap maxi. That is an 8-inch spread on the same letter size. This is normal in plus-size clothing, and it's why you should not pick a size from a generic "1X equals size 18" chart.

Table: Recommended bust for a size 1X, by dress style

Dress style 1X recommended bust Why the range differs
Halter-neck back-tie flared dress 42–45 in Adjustable ties; flared skirt frees the hips
True bodycon, curve-hugging stretch 42–45 in Stretch knit is engineered to hug closely
Ruched bodycon, non-stretch 39–41 in Fit comes from ruching, not stretch; narrowest band
Relaxed straight-cut t-shirt dress 43–46 in Roomier cut; size up for an oversized look
Faux-wrap maxi with tie waist 43–47 in Adjustable straps and tie add room
True-wrap ribbed knit dress 41–43 in Bust is the key fit point; waist ties fully

How to choose between 1X and 2X

If you are between sizes, use the fit of the dress as your guide.

  • Bodycon: Choose based on your largest measurement among bust, waist, and hips. Stretch knit gives. Non-stretch ruched fabric does not. Size up if you are between sizes.
  • Relaxed, straight, or A-line: Order your usual size for an easy fit. Size up for an oversized look.
  • Wrap and tie-waist: On true wraps, the waist adjusts. Your bust is the main fit point. Size up if you want more chest coverage.
  • Halter and flared: The tie neckline and flared skirt leave more room at the waist and hips. Focus on bust and shoulder fit.
  • Elastic-waist styles: The waistband flexes. Match your bust and waist to the chart and order your usual size.

1X vs XL: what's the difference?

1X is not just a bigger XL. XL is usually the top of a straight-size range, graded up from a pattern made for straighter proportions. 1X starts from a plus-size pattern with more room through the bust, waist, and hips.

The two sizes can overlap near US 16, but they are not the same fit. If an XL fits your shoulders but pulls across the bust or hips, try 1X.

What size is 0X?

0X is usually the first size in a plus range. It often fits US 12–16W. On our charts, 0X reads 14W–16W on the halter dress and 12–14 on the relaxed t-shirt dress. It is one step below 1X. Check the chart for the specific dress.

How to measure yourself for plus-size clothing

Measure your body, not a dress you already own. Use a soft tailor's tape. Wear a well-fitting everyday bra.

  • Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
  • Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, the narrowest point just above your belly button.
  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, about 8–9 inches below your waist.

Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger under it. Write your measurements in inches or centimeters. Then compare them to the recommended body measurements on that dress's product page. Do not compare them to the letter size alone.

How CurvyEdit builds its plus-size size charts

We do not use one universal 1X chart for every dress. We measure each sample and list the body measurements that fit best for that cut. A stretch bodycon and a relaxed maxi need different numbers. That is why our product pages may show different 1X ranges.

Our fit team also tests on real body shapes. In a recent fit session, a 5'6" model with a 44-inch bust, 36-inch waist, and 46-inch hips wore a 1X in the Seaside Maxi Dress. In a non-stretch ruched bodycon, she sized up to 2X for a smoother fit. That does not mean every woman with those measurements will choose the same size. It shows how much the cut matters.

CurvyEdit plus-size range

CurvyEdit carries 0X through 4X. Because fit varies by cut and fabric, the US size equivalent of a CurvyEdit size—including 4X—can differ by style, so there is no single US number for it. Not every dress comes in every size. Some styles run 0X–2X. Others run 1X–4X. Always use the Recommended Body measurements on that product's size chart rather than the US label alone.

The Seaside Maxi Dress runs 1X–4X—check its product page size chart for the exact Recommended Body measurements. It has a linen-look fabric, short sleeves, a stretchy elastic waist with a removable tie belt, and deep side-seam pockets.
The elastic waist and A-line skirt give you room through the middle and hips. Check your bust and waist against the chart. It runs true to size for most shoppers.

FAQ

Is 1X the same as size 16W? Not always. Many brands map 1X to 16W–18W. Some relaxed styles list 1X as 16–18. Always check the specific size chart.

Is 1X the same as XL? No. XL is usually a straight-size size. 1X is a plus-size size cut with more room in the bust, waist, and hips. They can overlap around US 16, but the fit is different.

Should I size up in a 1X? It depends on the dress. Size up in a non-stretch bodycon if you are between sizes. For relaxed, A-line, and elastic-waist styles, your usual 1X is often right. For wrap dresses, let your bust guide you.

What if I am between 1X and 2X? Use your largest measurement for bodycon styles. For loose styles, choose based on how you want the dress to fit. Size up for extra room. Stay with 1X for a closer fit.

Does CurvyEdit carry 3X and 4X?  Yes. Selected styles go up to 4X. The US equivalent of our 4X varies by style, so always confirm with the Recommended Body measurements on the product page instead of relying on a single US size. The Seaside Maxi Dress runs 1X–4X. Other styles may stop at 2X or 3X. Check each product page.

Bottom line

There is no single 1X body. In most plus-size clothing, 1X fits US 16W–18W. A typical 1X is around a 42–46 inch bust, 34–41 inch waist, and 46–49 inch hips. But the dress cut decides the final fit.

Measure your body, read the chart for that specific dress, and choose by silhouette. If you are between sizes in a non-stretch bodycon, size up. If the dress is relaxed or has a tie waist, your usual 1X may be perfect.
